What exactly is the toddler class all about?
The main aim of the group is to encourage the children to develop independence, confidence and their natural curiosity about the world around them. We hope to show parents ways they can bring the Montessori approach into their everyday lives and empower their children through simple but exciting activities that use everyday objects made from natural materials.
The activities we offer have a real purpose, not imaginary play but real activities, and better meet the interests and needs of the children coming to the group, specifically selected by their guide.
Children pour water so that they can drink or water the plants, butter bread so that they can have a snack and so on.
There are activities that encourage language development so crucial at this early age and many activities which give the children practical life skills. The children clean up spills, tackle zips and buttons, learn to wash their hands and so on. These activities are wonderful life skills in themselves but also develop children's memory, fine and gross motor skills and give them the valuable experience that learning is fun!
Other activities provide sensory experiences exploring colour, shape, texture, smell and sound as well as the sense of the child's movement.
In addition the children are able to explore creative skills working with among other material brushes, dough and glue. In all these activities the focus is on the experience of using the materials rather than creating a piece of art work - a child's need for this develops much later.
And finally we provide the children with a social experience - the musical circle. This is a space where the children learn to be together and share in a common activity. They learn about taking turns and being aware of the needs of others as well as the joy of music and stories.
For those parents looking for an alternative to a traditional kindergarten group in light of the COVID-19 pandemic these groups provide a simpler alternative where children can interact socially but at the same time limiting their exposure to large groups. We are working hard to keep the dugu space as safe as possible at this time and have implemented extra measures to this aim.
